About Jack

Jack Gates is a guitarist, composer, and teacher.

As a creative musician, Jack Gates has developed a unique guitar style embracing flamenco, samba, jazz, classical, raga and blues music.

Great Beginnings

Jack Gates grew up in Northern California in the Berkeley area. When he was young his parents introduced him to classical music. After studying some flamenco and folk guitar, at age 16, jazz guitar lessons opened new doors of perception. Enthralled with the playing of Jimi Hendrix, Jack put together a rock’n’roll band, and at the age of 18 began to play at local dances and nightclubs.

International Flair

Jack had the opportunity to travel to Italy to study, while there he also played music with his friend, sitarist Tim White. Learn more about Tim White here. This association led Jack to the study of North Indian classical music under Maestro Ali Akbar Khan.

Performing With the Finest Musicians

Performing at festivals, and nightclubs in San Francisco and the Bay Area with some of the finest musicians from Brazil, Latin America, and the U.S., Jack developed his colorful and expressive guitar sound.

Jack Gates has performed with Liza Silva, Jeff Narell, Marcos Silva, Daria, Klezmania, The Blake Street Hawkeyes, Chalo Eduardo, Claudia Gomez, David Motto, Robert Kaufman, Monica Pasqual, and David Belove.
